FAQ

WHAT DOES THE WORD MAHENDI MEAN?

MAHENDI is an acronym for MAternal HEalth and Neonatal Development Intiatives – a constant reminder of our purpose to create meaningful jewelry that celebrates women, mothers and families while supporting and raising awareness about global safe motherhood initiatives.

HOW DOES YOUR MANTRA GUIDE MAHENDI?

At MAHENDI, we are very spiritual and believe the universe provides signs to guide us on this journey. We like to read the mantra every morning before we begin our day.

The four points of our symbol are a constant reminder of the 4 "points" of our Mantra. Clarity, Wisdom, Strength and Grace. Characteristics that form the guiding principals of our company. When making decisions or searching for guidance, we look to our mantra as a reminder of our values and purpose.

Clarity – Reminds us to focus clearly so we may be mindful of our surrounding to find and appreciate the "good" in every day!

Wisdom – Reminds us to use the wisdom from our personal experiences to have the insight we need to act upon our discoveries

Strength – Reminds us to have the strength and confidence to recognize the opportunities to be the change we want to see in the world .

Grace – Reminds us to act with great intention and integrity always.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO WORK WITH THE UN TRUST FUND (UNTF) TO END VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN?

Actually, the UN chose us and we couldn't be more honored to work with them.

We believe that safety is a universal human right. After traveling and working in Mexico and Africa, we became acutely aware of the risks facing women and girls worldwide, especially surrounding maternal health and intimate partner violence. Now more than ever, we are not only inspired to support and protect women, but also feel a great sense of urgency to do more. For that reason, our mission is to create meaningful jewelry and products that raise funds and deeper awareness regarding ways to empower and celebrate women and girls and to keep them safe throughout their lifetime. And who better to do this than the United Nations. We proudly donate a portion of all of our sales to the UNTF.

HOW DO YOU CHOOSE NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS TO WORK WITH?

We are open to working with well-established, transparent non-profits that we feel are fully aligned with our mission, values and purpose. It is our hope that MAHENDI will have the opportunity to work with other non-profits that support safe motherhood and neonatal developmental initiatives while overcoming the associated barriers and related reproductive health concerns.

WHO DESIGNS YOUR COLLECTIONS?

Primarily, cofounders, Tera Herman and Mara Kitt, create MAHENDI designs. They find inspiration from their travels, chosen materials and in the meaning of the stones they work with. As an Art History graduate and a retail maven, Mara brings a unique perspective to her designs. Her experiences influence her combination of colors and materials in every piece she creates.

To create a fresh interpretation of MAHENDI, we’ve developed our MAHENDI X Artisan Collection. We work with likeminded artisans to incorporate the MAHENDI symbol into their unique design. Interested in collaborating? Contact us here:
