The story of UNEXPECTED began not with a brief or a formula, but with a conversation—and a curiosity about whether a place could be captured by its scent.

An Invitation Just Steps Away

Brooke Kelly, president of the Discover Bedford County Center, had a question that most people never think to ask: could the feeling of Bedford County be captured in a scent?

It wasn’t an abstract idea for her. The Discover Bedford County Center sits only a few steps from our store,and she had spent time there watching something happen again and again. Customers would walk through our door, breathe in, and visibly soften. The scent doing that work was Relax—the fragrance we created for the Omni Bedford Springs Resort & Spa. She heard the reactions. She saw the way people responded to something they couldn’t quite name.

That was the moment the idea took shape. If a single scent could do that to a room full of strangers, what would it mean to capture the spirit of the entire county—something memorable, something that belonged to this place and nowhere else?

So Brooke approached us with the challenge: create the scent of Bedford.

Finding the Moment

You can’t bottle a county. But you can bottle a moment.

The inspiration arrived as an image—a quiet dawn in Bedford County, before the day fully arrives, before anything asks to be done. Mist drifts slowly over the hills, softening every edge. Trees stand in stillness,grounded and watchful. Light begins to unfold, gently, almost imperceptibly, catching on the curve of the land,resting in the fields, glimmering in drops of morning dew.

That was the moment that shaped the blend. The desire wasn’t just to remember it, but to hold it in something tangible—to let those who pass through this place carry a piece of it with them. Not as a souvenir, but as a feeling. An atmosphere that lingers.

Building the Blend, Note by Note

Every fragrance is a small piece of choreography, and UNEXPECTED unfolds in four movements:

Lavender moves first, softening the air into calm, like open fields at first light.

Cypress follows, steady and green, rooted deep in the quiet earth—anchoring the breath, slowing time.

Then comes grapefruit, unexpected—like sunlight breaking through mist, illuminating the dew, bright and alive for only a moment.

Bergamot gathers that light, warming it, softening it, allowing it to remain.

Together, they become a way to step back into that morning—to feel the stillness, the clarity, the quiet senseof possibility that lives in untouched hours.
